1. Lucas Gan is an adventurous and athletic 5th year dental student. Lucas has won various basketball tournaments and has been leading SEGi’s basketball team since year 1. He was also the chairperson of RUNAID 2018 a run that raises funds for Dentistry for the Needy (DFTN). His interest in sports has been cultivated since young, as he grew up in an athletic family. He finds sports to be a good way for his family to bond amidst their hectic schedules.
Videography is also a passion of this multi-talented athlete. He started off doing travel videography and participated in various video shoots. He first shot for RUNAID Charity and was even hired as a videographer for a fashion show later on. Lucas has also collaborated with Dr Kayla Teh on her Youtube channel on dental related videos, and also contributed to making the video on Quackery in Dentistry for 2019 MDASCATE conference. Apart from videography, Lucas hopes to merge his love for dentistry and photography into expanding his knowledge in Dental photography as he sees much opportunity in this field.
2. Edward picked up volleyball at the age of 8. Since then, he has performed exceptionally well in this sport and have represented his school and district in volleyball tournaments for 9 years. He was selected to represent Selangor state in the national schools volleyball tournament at the age of 11 and 12. Being physically energetic, he also participated in Track and Field tournaments from the age of 16.
Ever since his first year in dentistry, he has been participating in the Dental Inter-Varsity Games (IVG). His best achievement was winning the gold medal in the 400m event in 2017. He also played a major role in helping his team to win the silver medal in the 4x400m relay event that year. In addition, he was the captain of the volleyball team for the IVG 2018. As a captain, Edward learnt to unite his team as a whole, putting aside all the differences and encouraging every player to strive for greater achievements.
3. Timothy Gan Hwa Yung is a 5th year dental student in SeGi. He was the assistant chairperson for RUNAID2018. This experience allowed him to communicate effectively among different races and religions. He firmly believes that to be successful in dentistry, communication is key. In high school, taekwondo was one of his strong suits. Through taekwondo, he cultivated his patience and found patience very important, as ‘you can’t attack without proper planning’. Basketball and frisbee are among some of the many sports that he is interested in. He picked up basketball during his high school days and would play whenever he was free. He even participated in the recent NDIVG Basketball games in 2017 and 2018! Besides that, Timothy also represented his university in the NDIVG frisbee competition in 2017 and 2018. He strongly believes that sports is a great way to keep stress at bay and to release some feel-good endorphins. Interestingly, one of his favourite past times is indulging in historical and cultural books. He believes that one shouldn’t limit their knowledge to a certain course as knowledge is limitless.
4. Redz started singing since he was 6 years old. Back in high school, he was part of a musical band, where he was trained to be a singer. He also took up a few singing jobs upon graduating from high school. Nowadays, singing is an escape from his stressful life.
He also took part in ‘SEGi Idol’ which is an annual talent show in SEGi University College and was crowned the 2nd runner up. As for the future, he dreams of composing songs with dental themes to raise the awareness on oral health. Besides singing, Redz is also a dancer. He has been dancing since preschool and had his own dance team in high school. He had also joined a lot of competitions together with his dance mates. Now, with much experience, he is able to fuse singing and dancing into his performances. Whenever Redz is not out with his family or friends, he is most likely to spend his time sharpening his singing and dancing skills.
5. Qing Wen is a 3rd year dental student who is very passionate about music. She first fell in love with the piano when she saw a girl playing melodiously on the television. Qing Wen started taking lessons since she was 8 and has been playing the piano for more than a decade. Besides that, Qing Wen is also an amazing singer. She finds singing a stress-reliever and enjoys jamming out in the middle of study sessions. She prefers performing instead of participating in singing competitions as she prefers singing for her own fulfilment and does not like to compete. Qing Wen also loves involving herself in sports such as ping pong, badminton and volleyball. She used to play ping pong when she was 10. At the tender age of 11, she became the state player for Negeri Sembilan. She went for vigorous trainings until the end of high school. In 2018, she was awarded best sportswoman of the year by SeGi University. Although she has achieved many successes, she believes that the hard work she put in throughout the journey is the most memorable of all.
