Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), also known as National University of Malaysia is one of the prestigious local research university. UKM has 3 campuses with main campus at Bangi, Medical Campus at PPUKM Cheras and Health Sciences Campus at Kuala Lumpur. Faculty of Dentistry UKM is situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, right beside Hospital Kuala Lumpur. But that’s not all about this well known university that has been producing the brightest dental graduates. Read more to find out what’s so special about UKM’s dental faculty!

1. Faculty of Dentistry UKM was formed in 26th June 1996. It is the second oldest dental school in Malaysia that offers both undergraduate (DDS UKMalaysia) and postgraduate programs such as Orthodontics, Periodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Endodontics. The faculty recently saw the graduation of its first batch of postgraduate students from the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) Endodontology programme, making them the first three locally-trained endodontic specialists.

(Fun fact: The four-year postgraduate programme is benchmarked with the standard set by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Scotland, making UKM the only university in Malaysia offering this programme with a conjoint qualification!)

2. The first batch of DDS program had a total of 24 students, registered in 1997. There had been an increase of student intakes in 1998/1999 until 2001/2002 but the faculty decided to decrease the intake to 55 in 2009. Until this day, Faculty of Dentistry UKM has already produced at least 12 batches of competent dentists. Also, the DDS programme undergoes a process of accreditation in every 5 years by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) for the recognition of the degree.

3. Did you know that UKM’s graduation gown for dental undergraduates is in pink? This five year study program have successfully realized the mission, vision and goals of the university and faculty. Faculty of Dentistry has produced graduates of distinction in knowledge and clinical skills and provide the best service to the community. #MisiJubahPink

4. UKM dental student association named UKMDENSTA was formed in 1998. UKMDENSTA organised awareness and charitable activities such as Oral Cancer Run, Raincoat Run and etc. After almost two decades of successful activities, a song was composed and written by Khizreen Rothman, a senior in UKM Dental Faculty, titled UKMDENSTA BERJAYA. The song was first sang during Dental colloquium 2017 and the song was sung by our fresh graduate, Dr. Hafiz Zainal.

5. UKMDENSTA had been organising academic visit to their counterpart in neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Singapore for the past several years. It is a way for the students to learn about dental health care in the region. This helps the participants understand how cultural differences can impact dental health care. The aim is to build a bridge between the dental fraternities in the region to foster stronger bond between countries. This will ultimately facilitate the flow of information in the future for the advancement of dental health care.

6. In the midst of busy schedules, sports is one of the way to unite out students, to achieve this, they created an iconic mascot - Badgers! Our Athletes: Sweet like Honey, Fierce like Badgers!
