ORAL SURGERY COMPETITION GUIDELINES

The Malaysian Dental Students’ Association (MDSA) will be conducting a suturing competition and a quiz in relation to the field of oral surgery in collaboration with The Malaysian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (MAOMS) and 3M Oral Care Malaysia. The guidelines of the competition are as follows: 

  1. Limited to 1 participant from each university for 5th year dental students.

  2. There will be two parts to the competition:

Preliminary round 

  • All participants will be given 6 situational questions and will be required to perform 6 types of suturing technique. The participants will be required to complete the sutures within the given time frame of 1 hour. 

  • Participants will be allowed to make repeated trials until they are satisfied with their final outcome with the limited amount of sutures given. They are required to remove the previous sutures that they are not satisfied with. 

  • Suturing will be on either sponge, leather or sponge in a cup. This will be announced on the competition day itself. 

  • Only sutures will be provided. You are required to bring any instruments that you may need, such as tissue forceps, needle holder, scissors 

  • The suturing techniques asked will be of basic suturing techniques that the participants will be required to know as a general dental practitioner.

  • Gloves and masks will be provided. But only powder free gloves will be provided.  Please bring your own gloves if you have a latex allergy. 

  • The top 4 participants with the highest points will advance to the finals. 

Finals

  • The 4 finalists will be on stage for a live dental quiz related to oral and maxillofacial surgery.

  • 45 minutes will be allocated for this final round.  

  • The quiz will be based on the following topics: 

    • Infection control 

    • Removal of impacted 3rd molars 

    • Maxillary and mandibular fractures 

    • Management of medical emergencies in a dental clinic 

    • Principles of suturing 

    • Biopsy techniques 

    • Management of dentoalveolar injuries 

    • Management of soft tissue injuries 

    • Needlestick injury

3. Participation forms should be sent to ndscsc.oralsurgery@gmail.com and should be completed as instructed. 

4. Only complete participation form sent in by 7th March 2020 will be considered. 

5. MDSA reserves the right to disqualify any participation if the registration form is incomplete or not up to the required standards. Final decision will be at the discretion of the organizers.
