DENT Voluntary Project 2018
Dent Voluntary Project 2018 was held on the 3rd to 4th of February 2018 at Taka Village, Taka District, Mae Tha District, Lamphun Province, Thailand. It was organized by Dental Student Union of Thailand (DSUT), in collaboration with Dental Student Association of Chiang Mai University and Western University.
The project was aimed to cultivate public consciousness towards the community while learning the lifestyle of the local people among the dental students; and to improve the quality of life of the local people through various activities held by the participants.
The 2D1N project involved a majority of Year 3 students from every dental schools in Thailand. The participants reached out to local community to raise oral health awareness by giving oral hygiene instructions (OHI) to the school children, as well as providing free services such as applying fluoride varnish. We also helped the villagers by doing some community work such as cleaning local elementary school and visiting bedridden patients at their houses. Throughout the project, participants had gained the opportunity to establish relationships and exchange knowledge among the dental students from different universities.
This event was the first collaboration between DSUT and MDSA, which involved 70 dental students from a total of 13 universities in Thailand and 2 Malaysian participants on behalf of MDSA. Although the event was conducted fully in Thai, local students were being extra helpful in translating and explaining the whole time! We would like to express our utmost gratitude towards DSUT for the invitation and the incomparable hospitality given to us throughout our stay in Thailand.
